Moving Image

(I need to scan and upload my development work...but)
I quickly photographed my handcrafted frames on my light box...I didn't spend a long time resizing the frames etc. as my intention was mainly to see if the sequence worked which I think it does...I hope lol.

Creative Partner -

Creative Partner -
Nichola Tiffany

Why have you chosen to work with your creative partner? What are your aims?
I have chosen to work with Nichola as I feel our strengths will complement each other; I am more image based whereas Nichola is more type based, I hope this means we can collaboratively create work that we wouldn't be able to do as successfully when working on our own. Another reason is that I know I can communicate well with Nichola in terms of cooperating on a brief and making joint decisions where I can sometimes be quite shy if I dont know the person well. Finally, we both had a similar concern that; we don't live in Leeds and we commute via public transport therefore we're both comfortable working at home equally as much as in the studio; the fact that we're now working together means that we know we can trust each other to do the work independently.

What specific areas of creative interest/focus do you want to explore during this brief?
Depending on what brief we chose - I aim to explore illustration; hand rendered and digital, typography, layout and hopefully photography. In addition to this I aim to look at ways something designed for print could work on screen i.e. like a static advert on a website etc.

What specific design skills do you have to offer?
- Image making.
- Crafting.
- Software / Technical compotance.
- Working with colour.
- Research

What specific non-design skills do you have to offer?
- Reliability.
- Enthusiasm.
- Dedication/Motivation.

What do you see your roles being in the creative partnership?
I assume my main role when it comes to working towards the resolution will be image making/illustration, depending on how we develop our work through the brief. I also see research as a large factor in every brief so I will be taking this into account aswell as idea generation etc.

What will your joint responsibilities be?
To decide on a brief, work together on idea generation and then divide the responsibilities equally for development work and make sure we both get the work done on time.

What problems can you identify with your creative partnership?
I understand the problem that could arise when working with friends as I may not want to be too critical over their work because i'd 'feel bad' but I'm like that with most people anyway, I tend to keep my opinions to myself. As I am quite stubborn/selfish and very independent, working with someone else and making joint decisions is difficult for me (as it is a lot of people, I'm sure) and In the end I may have a list of 'things I would have done differently' but as long as we communicate effectively and play to each others strengths, hopefully my list won't be too long!

New Module...Go!

I have to admit from to get go - I'm not the most enthusiastic person when it comes collaboratives briefs! Its safe to say I have been dreading this for a fair while.
I didn't really have a pre-concieved idea of who I wanted to work with...
So, when it came to creating the 'personal ad's' I thought i'd put some effort in and see where it got me! It worked well last year so why not this year!

(Photo of finals;)
Black ink printed on pink stock.

For the time limit we had, I'm quite happy with mine! My original intention was to have an illustration that I have done of Lou and Andy from Little Britain in the corner where the big black triangle is to add a bit of humour! But, the only copy of the drawing I had was from my blog which was really poor quality...therefore, I didn't use it :(

Thankyou to the people who put post-it's on my poster...I did fear that I would be post-it-less. However, I should have put shy and unconfident on the list of what I am because I didn't go talk to anyone except the person I knew - Nichola. At first I thought...'but am I prepared to sue her? Hmm'

After sitting around for a while and seeing everyone swiftly getting into the creative partnerships, we decided that we would pair up. Fact is - Yes, we are friends but our strengths are opposite, we know that we're reliable and we will both do the work, Nichola knows that I'm not the most excited person when it comes to collaborating And finally, neither of us live in Leeds...therefore we both know how to work effectively and independently at home but can bring it together in studio time. So, in the past I've followed the advice of not working with friends but i'm never gonna know what its like unless I try it!

Smile! :D lol.

2D to 3D to 2D - Final

The 'parts'

#1 - I quite like this one, but my original drawing was
portrait so I won't be using this one!
#2 - This one was actually my favourite out of the final
images that I took because of the composition and
angle but it doesn't fully reflect the original drawing
so once again...I won't be using this as my final image.
#3 - In terms of reflecting my original drawing, I think this
one works best so I will be using this one but I think it
could be done better...so I hope, before module hand in
I can photograph it in the original way that I wanted to at the church.

*Another annoying thing; I haven't left myself enough time to get it printed out in the digital dungeon so i'll have to print it out in the mac suites...for now.

2D to 3D to 2D - #3

So! Due to fact that I can't do what I wanted to, I had to think of another way to re-create the 2D to 3D...therefore...

I intend to use a photograph of the church that I already have - print it out A3 - cut it out - mount it onto board so I can stand it up - photograph it in a similar way that I was going to photograph it on the field.

Out of all the photos that I have, I think these two are the most appropriate for what I intend to do:

I think in terms of printing quality, I will use the second image just because on the first one...the cross is quite small and I don't think the 'church' part of the image would be obvious enough in the final image therefore the second one would work better.

2D to 3D to 2D - #2

What I really wanted to do was photograph the hat with an actual church in the background and using scale, composition and angle etc. make it look like the church was wearing the hat...

So, I successfully attached the hat too a pole so that it could be held up and be 'floating' to make it look like it was on the church with no strings attached...And stuffed it with carrier bags to make it look like it wasn't being warn as apposed to an empty, flimsy hat...and went to the fields at the back of my house where you can see/get to St Pauls church.

However, there were a few problems:

1) The weather...it was misty and as the weather person would say, there was 'Poor visibility' therefore; you can't really make out that there is a church in the background.

2) The graveyard...to see the church from a decent angle, I would have to photograph it from the graveyard and although its usually empty, the only time I could go to the church in daylight due to being at college etc. there were quite a lot of people there who (judging by the looks on their faces and angry pointing) found it disrespectful that I was stood there with a floating hat and a big camera :)
Now to think of another way that I can do it...

2D to 3D to 2D - #1

Before I could pursue the final set up, I needed to prepare the 'exclaiming hat'...I didn't have a hat that looked like the one of the picture but I think it still works

(Step 1 -)
I wish I'd had brown wool as it would have
looked better on the hat but...I didn't and from far away
it doesn't look Too bad so its ok...

Fin...

I'm really happy with how the hat turned out...but I don't think I'll be wearing it out in public...until the fashion of exclaiming hats catches on, gotta be prepared!

OUGD202 - Self Evaluation.

This module has been hard work but ultimately good in terms of my personal development, as I have always had a keen interest in moving image but never really pursued it very much as I didn’t know how to use software such as After Effects etc. therefore when I found out that this was the focus of Design Production – Digital module I was looking forward to it.

Throughout this module I have developed skills in areas that I had none before i.e. the software and storyboarding. In terms of software, it has definitely shown me easier ways to do things that I would have known before so thinks that would have taken me hours or days before are much more realistic to do in terms of time management. I don’t think that my final resolution shows a particularly wide range of skills of using After Effects to its full potential however, it allowed me to create what I intended to from the start and I didn’t really need all the 3D tools etc, so I am content with my technical competence with After Effects and for this reason, would be comfortable using it again in the future and working more with it to develop skills. I didn’t spend as long working with DVD studio as I did with After Effects obviously but I think it is a really good piece of software to know how to use. Once again, I’m not sure my final resolution fully shows a great understanding of the software but I have a basic understanding that could be developed in the future if need be. On the non-digital side, I found that storyboarding is actually a lot more useful than I primarily thought. While taking part in the storyboarding workshops I did find them useful but found myself thinking that it wouldn’t exactly benefit however, as my work developed I was proved very wrong. I realised that all my storyboards didn’t need to be hugely detailed; as long as I understood them, it made turning my ideas into digital a lot easier; especially the pacing timetable.

In this module, I think that because I knew we were only handing in a DVD at the end and all my work would either need to be on there or my blog, the documentation of my work has got a lot better and so has updating my blog; at the beginning of the module it was terrible and I think I maybe did 10 posts in one day ‘panic updating’ and to save myself from doing that again, I updated a lot more and this made organising my work in the end for the DVD a lot easier than creating the PDF was for the last print module.

One of my weaknesses I feel in this module has actually been my research, particularly for the Top 10 and DVD brief; I did a lot of initial research at the beginning of Top 10 brief and then didn’t really do much more and I didn’t actually document any research into DVD interface design or DVD packaging. I am disappointed at myself for this, as research is usually one of my strengths and in the future I hope to find a balance between my Design Practice and Design Context blogs.

In terms of my final resolution, I am very happy with my title sequence; it captures the humorous tone that I wanted to portray and it works well with the subject matter, obviously there are things I could develop and when watching it over and over again I see tiny things that I want to change but for the time we had and the fact I didn’t know how to use After Effects at all at the beginning of the module, I am content with what I have produce and I think it reflects me as a designer as well. If I could go back, the thing I would probably spend more time on would be the DVD, it was somewhat left to the last minute; especially the final interface design (as documented on blog) and when played on a TV DVD player, it responds quite slowly so I would have spent time trying to rectify this but once again, in terms of building new skills and presenting my work in different way, I am quite happy with it. Also, even though it wasn’t a big part of the module; I feel that my DVD packaging works well with the context of the digitial work, I just wish I had done it earlier so that I would have posted my development work for it up on blog before the module deadline but I will still document it for my own purposes.

Overall, I am happy with the work that I have produced this module, I feel my biggest weakness has been making a decision and sticking to it and if I had done this, I would have probably got a bit more sleep.

5 things that I will do different next time:

1 – Experiment more with the software.
2 - Prioritise time better – don’t rush the DVD at the end.
3 – Communicate with tutors more – once I had eventually asked Mike for help, my work went a lot easier.
4 – Leave time for improvements at the end of the module – so then I would have had time to try and get my DVD to work better.
5 – Sleep more.

Finished Rationale

Brief Title: Top 10 Celebrity Stories of 2009.

Subject & Rationale (including themes, target audience, tone of voice)
Having chosen the 'Top 10' brief, I intend to create a 50 second title sequence for a show with the title 'Top 10 Celebrity Stories of 2009'. To create a socially relevant piece, I need to research what were the most popular or most read celebrity/gossip stories of the last year, for example; the Tiger Woods affairs and the death of Michael Jackson.
It will be aimed at a UK audience, therefore the stories chosen need to be about celebrities that are actually well known over here otherwise it isn't going to make people want to watch it.
As previously mentioned, it will be aimed at a UK audience, but more specifically; women aged 16 - 35.
The tone of voice will be light hearted, humourous (where appropriate) and portray 'easy watching' similar to other programmes on the intended viewing channel of BBC three (Shows such as 'Most annoying people of 2009').

Design Direction:

In terms of colour, I intend to keep it relevant to the 'world of celebrity' and take inspiration from celebrity gossip magazines such as heat! and OK etc. Therefore pink will more than likely be apparent.
I will use upbeat music to portray the tone of the programme, keep the audience interested and in a 'happy' mood.
I want to keep quite a 'hand-rendered' feel to the whole title sequence as I don't think a highly vectorised look would suite the subject and it will also reflect me as a designer. Also, I intend to use a variety of textures or patterns as apposed to using a completely flat colour as I think this will complement the hand-rendered drawings.

DVD Packaging -

So, I may have left it a little late....well, in retrospect I left it Too late. But I have done it.
This is development for my DVD packaging; I think it reflects the work thats on the DVD well and works as packaging.

Idea 1;
(Rough drawing but...) This was the initial idea that would have worked...but I wasn't too happy with the idea...so I moved it on:

Idea 2;
The idea is that its 3 parts, you fold open the first page...then fold it again to reveal the DVD. This way I can use the 'scene' from my top 10 animation.

Mock up of how the folding etc. will work;

As the magazine I have used for my animation is inside pages...I wanted to create a front page for the front of the DVD case;
Obviously, I wanted it to reflect the design direction of the rest of my Top 10 work which I feel it does because of the typefaces and textures...
And here is how it will look when folded out:

Outside;
Inside;
The toast and plate Is the CD...whether I will have time to print onto the CD is another story but I hope I do.
However, if I don't - This was my intention.
:)

Timelines / Pacing

I've only just got round to uploading these because I did them by hand...but I really didn't realise how much it actually would help! Doing them was definately a good choice!

Final DVD Interface's

Ok...So. After the presentations on tuesday, I got jealous of the people with animated DVD interfaces and got annoyed with mine so...I decided I wanted animated ones too (A little late to decide something like this but...oops)

So, here are the final DVD menu interfaces -
* For the silent movie, I took the design direction of those animations. After doing it, I'm not sure whether this is 'wrong' or not? However, I feel it works well with that section of the DVD.

Main Menu;

Top 10 Menu;

Extra's Menu;

DVD Development Menu;

'Briefs' menu:

Silent Movie section:
Silent Movie main menu;

Silent movie tests menu;

Silent Movie finals menu;

Having worked with these and put them onto DVD Studio pro and simulating the DVD, I realise there are some things that I have missed off; mainly 'Play all' buttons and if I had time I would like to have had a soundtrack playing...
BUT, overall, I'm a lot happier with these than I would have been with the with the static ones I was working with.

(Also...having burnt my DVD and playing it full screen...the resolution is a let down. I'm not sure if this is my fault or just something that happens?)

Final decision.

I realised I can't ponder over this forever and I need to make a final decision.
Although all the lyrics may not be completely appropriate, I feel that the title sequence using the Paolo Nutini song would keep the audience attention more than the MGMT song would.

Therefore. I am going to finally properly export my title sequence using 'Pencil full of lead' - Paolo Nutini.

Musical choices...

After realising that I didn't like the music or think it was completely appropriate anymore, I went on to think about what music would be appropriate?
Taking into account my title sequence subject 'Top 10 Celebrity stories of 2009' I thought it would be more 'fitting' to use a track that was released in 2009 to give it more context.

From these, I listened to a few different songs and chose some that I thought might work and put them with my animation...

'Boom Boom Pow' - Black Eyed Peas
I chose this one mainly because it was such a well known track of 2009 and the beat might have worked with the animation...however...

...after putting it with the animation, I doesn't work as well as I expected - Its too 'hard'?

'Pencil Full of Lead' - Paolo Nutini
I chose this because its upbeat and therefore, goes with the tone of my title sequence.
I do think it works quite well, but its quite lyric heavy...and not all the lyrics are particularly appropriate; but I do think the last line 'Nothings gonna get me down' is fitting as the subject is about tabloid stories and celebrities always claim they won't 'let the stories get them down' (Jordan in particular...)

'Paparazzi' - Lady Gaga
Once again, another iconic track of 2009; The nature of the song - Paparazzi, fits well with the subject matter however I think the song worked better on paper in terms of lyrical content (See below video) etc, than in reality...it doesn't flow as well as I'd hope with the title sequence.

Lady Gaga - Paparazzi
We are the crowd
We're coming out
Got my flash on it's true
Need that picture of you
It's so magical
We'd be so fantastic, oh

Leather and jeans
Garage glamorous
Not sure what it means
But this photo of us
It don't have a price
Ready for those flashing lights
'Cause you know that baby I-

I'm your biggest fan
I'll follow you until you love me
Papa-Paparazzi
Baby there's no other superstar
You know that I'll be your-
Papa-Paparazzi

'Don't Stop' - InnerPartySystem
Not particularly a huge track of the year, but it was released in 2009. I really expected this to work with the title sequence because of the tempo and lyrics especially; in terms of lyrical content (See below video) I think this one works best, however...once again, I'm not sure about it as a whole.

InnerPartySystem - Don't Stop
The road I walk is paved in gold
To glorify my platinum soul
I'll buy my way to talk to God
So he can live with what I'm not.

The selfish blood runs through my vains
I gave up everything for fame
I am the life that you adore
I feed the rich and fuck the poor.

I got, you want
It's just, don't stop
I got, you want
It's just, don't stop.

This is entertainment
Lives are entertainment
You are down on your knees
Begging me for more.

'Kids' - MGMT
These were quite a big success in 2009, and this song was originally released in 2008 but it found more success in 2009. Admittedly, with the lyrics its not exactly relevant however the section of the song I have used has no lyrics, and overall, I think this probably works best with upbeat tempo, the melody is contemporary and recognisable and works with the pace of the title sequence.

Final Title Sequence (I think)

Finally I've put it all together and initially...I am really happy with it (Although the good quality exported one for the DVD is jumping all the time?? Hmm.)
BUT! I'm not sure about the music anymore?
I'm gonna 'listen' around for a better soundtrack, I'm just glad I completed the animation side of it in enough time to realise that the soundtrack could be better!
*Also, Originally the magazine was completely static when it had zoomed into one of the stories but it seemed 'boring' and...still, as it was, so I simply added some slight movement to it and I feel this makes it more visually engaging.

Final storyboard

Final Title sequence decision...

While playing around on After Effects last night and looking at some of my storyboards...I was thinking about my final title sequence and the fact that I had decided I was going to show the animations for each story in descending order of the top 10...

Then :
I turned on MTV last night and it had a 'top songs of...' type of show on and the title sequence showed vector images of some of the artists but Not particularly in the order that they were in the top 10 which made me think about other similar shows and they don't usually show them in order, probably so it doesn't give too much about the show away, for example:

In this title sequence for 'Most Annoying people of 2009', Lady Gaga appears first but she isn't the number 1 most annoying Or the least annoying on the countdown...

So :
I made the 'executive' decision that I will Not show the stories in order on the title sequence I will 'mix it up' a little.
...and for this, I need to update my storyboard :)

2D to 3D to 2D Rationale -

Brief -
Reproduce a 2D drawing in 3D and then reproduce that as a 2D photograph.

Who needs to know?
General public - but probably not church-goers.

What do they need to know? -
A hat is exclaiming on a church.

What will they respond to? -
A3 photograph.

What research is required? -
Primary - Churches and hats.
Secondary - 2D to 3D to 2D?...

Scale/Frame/Format - Eye Chart feedback -

Issues Raised -
Maybe don't as many rows - bottom ones are less visible. Could just have 5?

Action to be taken -
Could take away a few rows.

General feedback -
- Looked digital - impressed that it was handrawn.
- Good choice of colour.

Eyechart #2 - Final

My final decision was that I didn't really want to print out my final (unless the hand-drawn one looked Awful) but I feel my decision to hand-draw it was appropriate to my object - a biro as it is a drawing tool...therefore I went with this.

The composition printed on 4 A4's to trace;

It was quite a time consuming process, obviously a lot longer
than it would have been to draw one, scan it and copy and
paste it (i'm not saying this a bad way to do it by any means!)
but I am pleased with my end piece so I feel it was worth it (I hope)

This need re-photographing but it illustrates
the final piece...
Although I am happy with the piece...I can already predict that my feedback will be that a lot of the lines aren't readable from 20ft; this is my own fault...but I still like it :)

Eyechart #1

Soo...my object that I got from the randomiser was a Biro. Quite a nice, simple, recognisible object.

I took a few photos to decide how I wanted the
pen (i.e. lid off...lid on top etc.)
I didn't spend long with lighting and things but I was
simply documenting the shape of a pen...

I created vectors of a couple of the pens...but as I mentioned in my research post, I thought I wanted to move away from vectorised images...but I tried it out anyway...but I'm not gonna use them...
From my photo of the pen with the lid on top, I created a few different compositions that I intend to print off and trace:

When I first did the above 2, I was a little dis-heartened as I thought 'is this all I can do?' but then I rotated the origina image and played around with it and was a lot happier with what I could do...

I think the examples above do still stick to the conventions of an eye chart in terms of scale etc. but they are a Lot more visually engaging than the first 2 layout examples.

However, after some deliberation...I decided the composition and layout below is the one that I will work with;

Final Crit.

'Scene' -

From the last crit, I took the advice to play around with the colours and background/tablecloth on my 'scene' for the animation; For the colours I took inspiration from the Juno title sequence as I think the subtle, rather than vivid in your face colours really work there and in this instance, I feel it still reflects a celeb magazine as it is represting last years stories (old stories) so the colours are 'worn'.
(* there is only supposed to be one slice of toast of the plate but
when I saved it as a jpeg. all the layers showed up...)

(Original)

- The animations will go into the grey areas seen on the magazine, apart from the top right hand corner where - due to the animation I'm using, it has to go on top.
- As it is evident, the full title for the proposed programme isn't seen on this screen shot - This is because it is 'written' at the end in a similar way to the following animation but (obviously) a lot more 'polished' - It will read 'Top 10 (Celeb stories) of 2009'

Animations -

The quality is...quite awful because its youtube and I didn't export them at the highest resolution.

Tiger Woods test -

MJ test -

Chris Brown and Rihanna test -

Brittany Murphy test -

SuBo test (for some reason this is
playing really fast...it isn't meant to and won't
on the final lol)-

Jordan and Peter test -

Kanye West storms VMA's test -

RATM and Joe McElderry test -

(There are earlier posts on my blog which kind of show what I am doing with the Lady Gaga story and Christian Bale story but I haven't exported more tests yet)

Music Choice -

DVD Interface -
I wanted to keep my interface pretty simple as it isn't seen for a long time, it is just used to direct the audience around the DVD but it still reflects my design direction.

I'm still kind of undecided as to whether or not to include the star strip (seen on the first image below) - I could animate this coming across and make it more visually engaging, but I don't know if it would be appropriate.
Below is a rough mock up of how the start menu could look - The typeface is the one which I used on my title sequence, however in this case i'm not sure if its too informal?
I intend to play around with the colour of the type and possibly add textures similar to which I used in my title sequence.

The sequence of images below shows how I intend to show progression through the sub-menus (i.e. When you click on 'Top 10' it takes you to another menu etc.)
Its a simple idea but I think it works quite well, is light hearted and quite funny.

So...5 Questions I would like response to:
1- Do you think my music choice is appropriate to the subject matter?

2- Do you think the mixture of animation styles will let the sequence down?

3- Are the colours on the magazine layout working, as apposed to my original more vivid colour pallette?

4- Is the typeface used for the DVD interface appropriate or too childish?

5- Are the DVD interfaces too simple?

Thankyou...x
