Lyrics and type ideas -

1. A Day to Remember - 'It may be the first time, but it won't be the last time'

2. Alexisonfire - 'We move like no one moves'

3. Bayside - 'If you hear this and you think you're ready, Meet me in Montauk' (Since sketching this, I have realised Montauk isn't a built up city...the most iconic image from there is of a lighthouse so that is what will be at the bottom)

4. Blink 182 - 'I'm always nervous on days like these like the prom' (this image idea may change)

5. City and colour - 'I'm afraid to sleep because of what haunts me'

6. Funeral for a friend - 'The red poison on your lips' (I want the type to look similar to the piece I did in the summer 'Blood sweat and tears')

7. Pierce the veil - 'Stop drop and roll don't work in hell' (After looking at informational graphics for 'Stop drop and roll' I am going to try and work with the image idea that is used quite commonly, showing a person stopping...dropping...and rolling.)

8. Taking Back Sunday - 'She says 'come on, come on' lets just get this over with'

9. Underoath - 'This is where they all throw me to the wolves'

10. We are the ocean - 'You've been to hell and back, so what am I supposed to do' (I want this piece to have a similar approach to that of another piece I did recently 'If you go down to the woods today')

Lyrics and Type colours

While I was 'tightening' up my briefs so that they were more specific, I decided I should choose the limited colours that I would use for my lyrics and type prints before I start designing them so that I don't spend hours deciding afterwords and then they will all be the same. When looking over the Lyrics and Type Verse 2 prints, I realised they were actually 3 colour...not two colour like I previously said. This isn't a problem, I just changed it on the brief.

I do think people will disagree with the way that I have chosen my colours but I couldn't think of any other way to see if the colours work well together before actually having my own design...so I just took some of the prints from the existing exhibition and changed the colours of them to see what I 'liked'. (Numskulls print and Drew Millward's print).





I have a 'thing' for this shade of green at the moment...which is probably obvious throughout my otherwork. I will probably get over soon...

I also realised I needed to determine what size they would be.
I didn't want a generic A size, so I tried to work out the size of the prints from the existing exhibition. If I assume I will be working to A2 scale, the size will then be H - 52cm (like A2) and W - 31cm.
I just think this will make them look more interesting.

Finally made a decision - Lyrics and type

I finally made a decision that I am happy with and that actually makes me want to get designing now! Thank god.


...after writing this I swapped The Almost for We are the ocean...just the one :D


Lyrics and type problem...

Well, as I had chosen groups of songs to research further...I have now looked through all the lyrics to these songs and highlighted the lines from the song that I think could be pursued...



However, I don't feel motivated by any of these sets of 10...and therefore, I wouldn't be completely happy with them in the end.
I feel the reason I am not motivated by them is that I have enforced the taxonomy restriction on myself as apposed to it being set by a client...and then I wouldn't be able to do anything about it, whereas now I can do something about it.

In order to have a set of 10 prints that I want to put in my portfolio, I think the way to motivate myself would be to use lyrics that I like.

Additionally, something that I realised - I have written this brief based on the Lyrics and Type exhibition...where all the artists got to choose what lyrics they wanted to use.
And, the focus of this brief is working with a limited colour pallette, digital illustration And design for print.

When I wrote this brief I was excited...when I started looking at the restricted lyrics, I wasn't excited. I really need to address this a.s.a.p so that I can start designing.

Lyrics and Type...deciding on the songs to use

After writing out a few ideas for what the songs could be grouped as...I researched what the actual songs in the lists would be.

Some people may see this as pointless and I should have just decided on one list to research...but I didn't want to find out the same artist was on one list about 5 times...because then it wouldn't varied and I just think it would ruin the set.

From the lists...I have 'whittled it down' to;
- Past 10 songs to be the headline performance at the MTV VMA's.
- 2000 - 2009 'Best Single' at the Kerrang! awards.
- Top 10 'First Dance' songs.




Lyrics and Type

While preparing my rationale for last weeks tutorial I realised that my Lyrics and Type brief was quite vague in terms of - What lyrics would I use?

Instead of just choosing 10 songs lyrics that I liked that other people may not even know, I decided I needed some sort of system/taxonomy too it.

I first started to think of groups that I start with;

- Past 10 Christmas No.1's
- Christmas No.1's of the 80's or 90's.
- Past 10 No.1 singles on my birthday.
- Past 10 songs to be the headline performance at the MTV VMA's.
- Past 10 Grammy 'Song of the year'.
- 10 songs with 'Mad' in the title.
- 10 most covered songs.
- Past 10 'Single of the year' at the Brit awards.
- Top 10 biggest selling singles.
- Top 10 songs with mis-heard lyrics.

(Some may change...)

I could't think of way to group songs that I like by lesser-known artists, so I decided that I would maybe just make that a personal project that needs no context or background research, just the words...and just a way of drawing more.
